SHOPPING (College Budget Edition): Courting Sarojini

By: Trisha Ray (Science and Tech Editor)

It’s been 2 months, and I’ve come to realize that what The Adults told me was true: college really is a completely different cup of tea. Yes, there is a whole lot freedom. Yes, I don’t have to report my every move to my parents. But, I now face the challenge of (horror!) managing my own finances.

Once upon a time, I could shop at Zara, Promod, Mango and Debenhams. Not anymore. Like a lost soul, I wallowed in the depths of great misery until, like a light in the distance; hope appeared in the form of Sarojini Nagar.

Sarojini Nagar is a fashion-conscious, budget-bound, college girl’s dream. Ten minutes by auto from the INA metro station (yellow line): it is a vast maze of shops. The market consists of two very distinct sections. I recommend the ‘inner ring’ (a friend’s term) for better deals. But if you can’t stand crowds and dust, the ‘outer ring’ would be better for you; and if you’re an ‘adventurous’ (I mean that in both a good and a bad way) foodie, you can sample the pao bhaji, aloo chaat, momos, gol gappa, chuski: absolutely delicious and any day better than a McDonalds or a KFC.

In the sacred inner sanctum, apart from the general chaos you can find:-trinkets of all shapes, sizes and colours; chic scarves, dresses, tees, shorts, palazzos, harem pants- name it, and it’s there! Of course, you have to be willing to invest a good deal of time. To get to the treasure, you’ll need to sort through the ‘junk’ (No offense. I understand that fashion is relative). Be patient- believe me, it’s worth it. And the most brilliant thing is that you can shop like your life depends on it, and still not spend more than a thousand bucks! I would go as far as to say that Sarojini Nagar is *sniff sniff* the jewel of Delhi.

So, fellow college girls, do not despair! If you find yourself craving for a little retail therapy, but have only a few stray hundreds in your  pocket, let Sarojini ji be the answer to all your woes! Go, shop, eat, and chill.

Oh, and hold on to your bags and beware of the pickpockets!

One Response to SHOPPING (College Budget Edition): Courting Sarojini

  1. Not just a college girls’ mecca for rasta shopping, but a dream destination for fashionistas on a budget. Who doesn’t like picking up skirts for a mere 150 bucks and bangles for 20 each!

Btw, can you pick up a few harem pants for me?
